Some 300 firefighters were mobilized for three fires that erupted in central, northern and southern Portugal Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

A total of 194 firefighters with 48 vehicles, five helicopters and five airplanes were sent to Oleiros in the northern region of Castelo Branco. The fire was endangering some 20 people and their homes.

Meanwhile, over 100 firefighters went to Castanheira de Pera and Monchique in central and southern Portugal for two fires.

No victims have been reported so far, authorities said.

According to the National Authority's Civil Defense, fires have destroyed a total of 4,685 hectares of forest in the country from Jan.1 to July 15, a sharp rise of 52 percent compared to the same period in 2007.
