NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer on Friday called for an immediate end to the fighting in Georgia's South Ossetia region and for direct talks between the parties concerned.

De Hoop Scheffer said in a statement that he was seriously concerned about the events and that the alliance is closely following the situation.

"The secretary general calls on all sides for an immediate end of the armed clashes and direct talks between the parties," said the statement.

Georgia is trying to join NATO.
