Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg decided to allot up to 5 million crowns (about 311,546 U.S. dollars) for humanitarian aid to Georgia, ministry spokeswoman Zuzana Opletalova said on Monday.
The government will discuss a probable further financial aid and the forms of help to Georgia at one of its nearest meetings, Opletalova said.
The conflict between Georgia and South Ossetia worsened on Aug.1-2, when South Ossetian authorities accused Georgian forces of shelling the provincial capital of Tskhinvali.
South Ossetia broke away from Georgia in the 1990s following the collapse of the Soviet Union. But their self-proclaimed independence has not been internationally recognized.
In response, Russian troops moved into the region to fight the Georgian forces and Russian warplanes also bombed the region. Moscow said the conflict has killed 1,500 people and that the death toll is expected to rise. (1 U.S. dollar = 16.049 Czech crowns) Source: Xinhua
