The Spanish government Monday voiced its appreciation of Sunday's recall referendum in Bolivia.
Spain "values the democratic maturity of the Bolivian society," which was expressed on Sunday at the recall referendum, said a statement of the Spanish Foreign Ministry.
The ministry said that the referendum, whose results reaffirmed Bolivian President Evo Morales's mandate, was held "in a climate of tranquility" during which "the Bolivian citizens were able to express their political preferences freely."
The Spanish government, while voicing its greetings to Morales, whose mandate "was democratically ratified," hopes that the voting can "favor the needed political dialogue" between the Bolivian government and the oppositions.
On Sunday Bolivia held a recall referendum during which Bolivians voted to decide whether to ratify the mandate of Morales and Vice President Alvaro Garcia.
Though it could take up to a week before the final results are tallied, both the initial results announced by the National Electoral Court and exiting polls conducted by survey institutions have showed that they are set to win.
