It is in the interest of the Czech Republic and Slovakia that Croatia joins the European Union as soon as possible, Czech and Slovak prime ministers Mirek Topolanek and Robert Fico said in Prague on Thursday.
Formal obstacles resulting from the Irish "no" to the Lisbon treaty must not stand in the way of Croatia's EU accession, Fico said.
The Lisbon Treaty was rejected by Irish voters in a referendum in June. The entry into force of the treaty requires the ratification of all 27 member states of the EU.
Croatia's EU entry will be one of the priorities of the Czech EU presidency, lasting from January to June 2009, Topolanek said.
Fico said both he and Topolanek will promote this stance during meetings with politicians from other EU countries.
Topolanek said in June that Croatia can be admitted to the EU on the basis of the Treaty of Nice that entered into force in February 2003.
Slovak will send two observers to the Czech Government Office during the Czech EU presidency who will focus on the organizational aspects of the presidency.
