South African President Thabo Mbeki extended his condolences to Spain on Thursday, following a plane crash at Madrid airport in which 153 people were killed.

"As the government and people of South Africa, we reach out in thoughts and prayers to the government and people of Spain and, in particular, those families who lost their loved ones in this tragedy, while wishing those wounded a speedy recovery," said Mbeki in a statement.

Nineteen people survived the accident which was triggered by fire which engulfed the jetliner during takeoff at Madrid's airport on Wednesday.
