German government spokesman Thomas Steg said Saturday that a political settlement of the Georgian conflict needs the participation of Russia.
Echoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Steg said it would be impossible to solve the Georgian conflict without the participation of the Russian side.
He also said that Merkel raised last week in Tbilisi a proposal to hold a meeting between the European Union (EU) and Georgia's neighboring countries. But the planned meeting is expected to be confined to stabilizing and shoring up economy in Georgia and the region.
Steg also said Merkel had informed French President Nicholas Sarkozy, whose country is holding the rotating EU presidency, of the proposal and a decision will come in a few weeks.
Meanwhile, Germany urged a complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgia. Source:Xinhua
