German Chancellor Angela Merkel said here on Monday she was very concerned about a appeal by Russia's parliament to urge President Dmitry Medvedev to recognize the independence of two breakaway Georgian regions.
The State Duma or lower house of the Russian parliament has approved Monday an appeal to President Dmitry Medvedev to recognize the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, the two breakaway regions of neighboring Georgia. Earlier in the day, the Federation Council, or upper house of parliament, voted unanimously in favor of a similar appeal.
The appeal goes counter to the cease-fire agreement that ended the conflict in Georgia, Merkel said at a press conference after talks with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.
But she did not expect that President Dmitry Medvedev will act as the Russian Parliament wishes. If Dmitry Medvedev is doing so, it would only add tension to an already critical situation, the German chancellor underlined.
Merkel demanded also Russia to pull immediately all its troops out from Georgia in accordance with the agreement envisaged in the plan of peaceful settlement.
Merkel arrived here on Monday for her first working visit to Sweden. After Stockholm, Merkel travels on to the Baltic states of Estonia and Lithuania.
