The Republic of Bulgaria reiterated its unconditional support for the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia in its internationally recognized borders, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Dimiter Tsanchev said Tuesday.
The decision of the Russian authorities to recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia is a cause of serious concern, Tsanchev told the reporters when he was asked to comment Russia's decision to recognize the independence of the two regions.
Bulgaria's position is the same as the one share by all member states of NATO and the European Union which called on Russia to immediately withdraw its troops from Georgian territory and committed themselves to rendering humanitarian and other aid for the population, Tsanchev said.
South Ossetia and Abkhazia broke from central Georgian rule during wars in the early 1990s after the collapse of the former Soviet Union. But their self-proclaimed independence is not recognized internationally. Source:Xinhua
