At least seven people were injured and two vehicles of the UN Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) badly damaged in an overnight clash between Serbs and Albanians in northern Kosovo, Kosovo's police said Thursday.
The incident started late Wednesday in the ethnically divided northern town of Mitrovica as two groups clashed and were joined by many others afterwards, police said.
NATO-led peacekeeping forces (KFOR) were forced to intervene early Thursday.
According to Jonuzi, KFOR and UNMIK police was called to assist local police in controlling the situation, which involved the exchange of fire.
Several people from both the Serb and Albanian sides sustained injuries.
Mitrovica has often been a flashpoint of clashes between ethnic Albanians and Serbs. Ethnically motivated incidents have been on the rise since Kosovo's Albanian majority declared independence from Serbia despite strong opposition from Serbia and Kosovo's Serbs.
Hours after the incident, the situation appeared to be calm but tense. Many international and local security forces were present in the town.
KFOR spokeswoman Philipe Bosc said additional international policemen were replacing military forces that intervened during the night to disperse the groups involved in the incident. Source:Xinhua
