France has threatened to impose sanctions on the Mauritanian military leaders of the Aug. 6 coup which ousted President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi.
"France notes that President Abdallahi has not been released and that the constitutional order established since the elections in March 2007 has not yet been restored in Mauritania, as required by the African Union, the European Union, the UN Security Council and the whole international community," a statement released Thursday by the French presidential office said.
"Under these conditions, France is ready to take measures of individual sanctions against those most responsible for the coup," the statement said.
The Mauritanian military staged a coup on Aug. 6 in the capital of Nouakchott, and arrested President Abdallahi and Prime Minister Yahya Ould Ahmed Waghf.
Following the coup, the AU and the International Organization of La Francophonie suspended the membership of Mauritania respectively. Source: Xinhua
