Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini spoke about the Georgia crisis on the telephone Tuesday with United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Italian News Agency ANSA said.
Frattini told Rice about Monday's European Union summit on Georgia where the European Union pledged to help Georgia recover from Russia's military intervention but stopped short of pressuring Russia other than suspending meetings on an economic pact.
Italian Foreign Ministry sources said Frattini also conferred with the secretary of state about Frattini's visits to Georgia and Russia on Wednesday and Thursday.
Last week, Frattini offered to hold an international conference in Rome to solve the Russia-Georgia crisis.
The minister said NATO, the United Nations, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) would be invited to attend along with Russia and Georgia.
Frattini said Italy was well placed to hold the conference due to its "recognition and appreciation for both parties."
