Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said here Wednesday that the Polish government was glad that Russian Federation Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov would pay a visit to Poland, local media reported.
According to Polish television report, Sergei Lavrov will visit Poland on September 11 for talks with his counterpart and the country's Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
The talks would reportedly cover bilateral relations, plans of deploying elements of the U.S. anti-missile shield in Poland and the future of EU-Russia relations as well as the latest developments in Caucasus.
Sikorski said in mid-August, after Warsaw had formally agreed to the deployment of 10 U.S. interceptor missiles on its territory, that Lavrov had canceled his planned September visit to the country.
The Polish Foreign Ministry, however, said the next day that Moscow had not formally confirmed the cancellation of Lavrov's visit. Sikorski then backtracked on his statement, saying it was a "misunderstanding."
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her Polish counterpart formally signed here on Aug. 20 an agreement to deploy parts of the U.S. global missile shield in the East European country.
The United States plans by 2011-2013 to install a base for 10 interceptor missiles in northern Poland to protect the United States and Europe from possible future attacks from what it calls "rogue" states.
Russia objects the anti-missile shield plan, saying it will threaten Russian national security. Moscow has warned that it will target its missiles at the system if it is deployed in Poland.
