French Justice Minister Rachida Dati Wednesday confirmed reports on her pregnancy.

"I want to stay careful, because it is not safe yet," she told local media, referring to the possibility of a miscarriage.

Dati, who is single, said she was happy for the pregnancy but refused to reveal the name of the father as she does not want to put her private life under public spot.

A daughter of North African immigrants, the minister said she will continue her work as pregnancy "is not a disease."

Born on Nov. 27, 1965, Dati has been a French focus since she was appointed by President Nicolas Sarkozy last year as the first politician of North African origin to hold a senior French government post.

The spokesperson for the French government declined to comment on who will take Dati's job when she is giving the birth and on pregnancy's influence on Dati's political prospect.

According to statistics released Wednesday by the French National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies, the country has seen more children born out of wedlock in recent years.

Among all the babies born last year, some 51.7 percent were illegitimate, showed the statistics.
