Talks on the status of U.S. troops in Poland are scheduled to begin in Washington on Sept. 16, local media reported Friday.

The United States want tax breaks for their soldiers and civilian personnel stationing in Poland and guarantees that their soldiers will not be brought before Polish courts on criminal charges, said daily Rzeczpospolita.

Poland will seek to increase U.S. involvement in the modernization of the Polish army, according to the report.

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her Polish counterpart Radoslaw Sikorski formally signed here on Aug. 20 an agreement to deploy parts of the U.S. global missile shield in the East European country.

The agreement provides for deploying Patriot missiles in Poland and strengthening Polish-U.S. military cooperation. It also includes a declaration of U.S. military cooperation in case of a threat to Poland from third states.

Russia objects the anti-missile shield plan, saying it will threaten Russian national security. Moscow has warned that it will target its missiles at the system if it is deployed in Poland.
