Spanish police said Friday they had detained Edgar Guillermo Vallejo Guarin, a most wanted top Colombian drug trafficker.
Police arrested Vallejo in a luxury hotel in Madrid Thursday night with help from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
Vallejo, 47, also known as "Beto Gitano," is allegedly responsible for many cases of cocaine trafficking from Colombia to the United States and Europe.
"Vallejo has a long history of violence, money-laundering and bribing high-ranking officials," the police said in a statement.
The United States had issued an international arrest order for Vallejo and offered a reward of 5 million U.S. dollars for clues leading to his arrest.
U.S. Ambassador to Spain Eduardo Aguirre said Vallejo's detention was an example of the "excellent" security cooperation between the two countries.
The operation has prevented a major drugs trafficker from operating again in the two countries and dealt a strong blow to the drug trafficking, he said.
Aguirre also said Washington would request the extradition of Vallejo.
