German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier will run for the country's chancellor in next year's federal election as the candidate for the Social Democratic Party, German media reported Sunday.

The websites of Der Spiegel magazine and Berlin daily Berliner Zeitung have both reported that Steinmeier's candidacy would be announced at a meeting of the party scheduled for later Sunday.

Both reports said that senior members of the party made the decision on Saturday as the popularity of its leader Kurt Beck dropped while that of Steinmeier remained high.

At present, the party is sharing power with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democratic Union in a grand coalition since the 2005 election.
