The visit of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to Poland "gives us a privileged opportunity for talks on fulfilling peace terms" related to the Caucasian conflict, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Sunday.
Lavrov's visit is scheduled for next Thursday, September 11, according to Polish news agency PAP.
Sikorski has told TVN24 news channel that talks will not be limited only to the Caucasus. He stressed that there is a number of important issues in Polish-Russian relations that should be raised.
"We are important trade partners for each other. Polish-Russian trade turnover of 11 billion euros is bigger than Polish trade turnover with some EU countries," the minister noted.
He said that Poland was concerned with the interpretation of history presented by certain Russian mass media.
Sikorski added that during talks with his Russian counterpart he would try to confirm Poland's previous offer of inspections and monitoring of the future U.S. anti-missile shield base in Poland.
"We would like Russia to feel comfortable as to what was going on in the base. It is not in our interest to mount an arms race on either side of the border," Sikorski stressed.
According to earlier Polish Foreign Ministry announcements, Lavrov is also to meet Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Sikorski and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice formally signed here on Aug. 20 an agreement to deploy parts of the U.S. global missile shield in the East European country.
Russia objects the anti-missile shield plan, saying it will threaten Russian national security. Moscow has warned that it will target its missiles at the system if it is deployed in Poland.
