Visiting Italian Prime Minster Silvio Berlusconi and his British counterpart Gordon Brown pledged on Wednesday to cooperate on nuclear energy.
"I'm pleased to announce our two countries will work together in the area of nuclear energy," Brown said at a joint news conference after talks with Berlusconi at the No. 10 Downing Street.
"We both agreed that nuclear power can play an important part in achieving our shared objectives on climate change and energy security," he said.
Speaking through a translator, Berlusconi said that Italy had "strong need" to invest in nuclear power to ease the reliance on energy imports, and would cooperate with Britain to speed up investments.
"We do hope that there is going to be a single nuclear policy for Europe," said Berlusconi, whose country is the only one without nuclear power in the G8 countries after it rejected it in a referendum in 1987.
During their meeting, the two leaders also discussed the issues of the subprime crisis, rising food and fuel prices.
