Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg will pay a five-day visit to Brazil and Chile from Monday with intentions to promote international cooperation on climate protection, Norwegian media reported.

According to the public broadcaster NRK, Stoltenberg is scheduled to meet Brazilian President Lula da Silva and announce Norway's financial support for the protection of the Amazonas rainforest. He will then travel on the Amazonas, to inspect the rainforest and meet with local officials.

Stoltenberg will also meet leaders of Brazil's state-owned oil giant Petrobras, and open an oil-related exhibition in Rio.

Norwegian oil and gas industry have made major investments in Brazil's oil and gas industry.

In Chile, Stoltenberg is scheduled to meet Chilean President Michelle Bachelet.

"The visit reflects the increasingly close ties between our countries. The Government is interested in facilitating close cooperation between Norway and both Brazil and Chile in the private sector and the energy field as well as in the international arena," said Stoltenberg.

"In particular, climate change and the fight against poverty are important themes in our international cooperation," the Norwegian prime minister said before the visit.
