Kazakhstan and NATO kicked off joint military exercises Sunday in a training ground near Almaty, a southern city in the central Asian country.
The joint war game, code-named "Steppe Eagle 2008," will last until Sept. 27.
According to Kazakhstan's Defense Ministry, the military exercises are part of a military cooperation deal between the two sides, and troops from the United States and Britain will take part together with their Kazakh colleagues.
The aim is to test the peace-keeping capability of the Kazakh and NATO troops and improve the coordination abilities of commanders, the ministry told the press, adding that NATO military experts would present their evaluation of the performances of the troops by the end of the war game.
Kazakhstan and NATO staged their first "Steppe Eagle" joint military exercises in September 2006.
