Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek will visit Spain on Thursday to discuss the priorities of the Czech six-month presidency of the European Union, starting from January 2009, the Czech news agency CTK said on Tuesday.

The Czech Republic will hand the presidency to Sweden, which will be replaced by Spain in January 2010.

Topolanek is to meet his Spanish counterpart Jose Louis Zapatero, Spanish Senate President Francisco Javier Rojo and King Juan Carlos I.

Topolanek said earlier that the country's priorities for its EU presidency would be Croatia's entry to the EU and NATO. He said he believes Croatia might join the EU in 2011.

Unlike France, the current EU president, the Czech Republic believes the EU enlargement is not dependent on the ratification of the Lisbon treaty.

Ireland, Sweden and the Czech Republic are the only EU countries that have not yet ratified the treaty. Sweden is to do so in November. The Czech parliament is waiting for the Constitutional Court to say whether the treaty comes in accordance with Czech legislation. Spain ratified the treaty in July.
