The U.S. airforce has ordered immediate inspection of about 130 A-10 combat attack aircraft due to cracking wings, officials said Friday.
The cracks are occurring on both the right and left wings of the aircraft, airforce spokesperson Kristi Beckman said.
"Taking immediate action is necessary for the safety of our aircrews and to bring our A-10 fleet back to health," he said.
The U.S. airforce has more than 350 such aircraft, which has been used extensively in Iraq and Afghanistan to provide close airsupport.
U.S. officials said the inspection and repair plan won't affect current and future combat operations.
