The 52nd General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which focused on the bloc's future role and development, concluded here Sunday.

At its concluding session, the General Conference adopted resolutions backing the IAEA's work and charting the course for the organization in key areas such as nuclear safety, nuclear applications and technology transfer.

During the General Conference, a two-day scientific forum looking at the nature and scope of the IAEA's programs to 2020 and beyond was held alongside several briefings on the Agency's work in areas such as nuclear energy, safety and security and technical cooperation.

Other events included a forum held by the International Safety Advisory Group focusing on the infrastructure needed for nuclear safety and an exhibit highlighting the work of the IAEA in various areas.

The conference elected 11 new IAEA board members with a two-year term including Afghanistan, Argentina, Burkina Faso, Cuba, Egypt, Malaysia, New Zealand, Romania, Spain, Turkey and Uruguay.

Chen Qiufa, director of the China Atomic Energy Authority, attended the conference and made a speech, stating the position held by the Chinese government in promoting peaceful use of nuclear energy.

He also held bilateral meetings with IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei as well as senior delegates from other member states.

About 140 IAEA member states and over 1,400 delegates attended this General Conference starting on Sept. 29.

The 53rd IAEA General Conference is scheduled on Sept. 14-18 next year.
