European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana Wednesday expressed satisfaction over the fact that Russian troops has started their final withdrawal from the buffer zone adjacent to South Ossetia and Abkhazia in Georgia.
"I just spoke to the Head of Mission of the EU Monitoring Mission, Hansjoerg Haber, who confirmed to me that the withdrawal is taking place and that the cooperation with the Russian commanders continues to be very constructive," Solana said in a statement.
"I express my satisfaction with the evolution of the situation and I welcome the words of President Medvedev that the withdrawal will be completed by midnight," Solana said.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced on Wednesday that Russian forces would complete their pullout from the buffer zone in Georgia.
He made the announcement in Evian, France, before talks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the current holder of the European Union presidency.
"I would like to inform you that by midnight today, the evacuation of Russian troops will be complete," Medvedev told a press conference two days before a pullout deadline set in an EU-brokered peace agreement.
Under the accord negotiated by Sarkozy, Russian troops must pull out by Oct. 10 from Georgia to where they were before the Georgia-Russia conflict in August.
