European Commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner welcomed here on Wednesday the reopening of the trade route between Indian and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
"This is an exciting moment for India and Pakistan, after 61 years, people in Kashmir on both sides of the Line of Control can now enjoy the benefits of regional trade," she said in a statement.
"This decision shows the vision of President Zardari of Pakistan and Prime Minister Singh of India in bringing people together," the commissioner said.
She voiced her hope that this momentum would continue, pledging the European Union's support to the resolution of their differences bilaterally through peaceful dialogue.
Pakistan and India on Tuesday opened trade across the Line of Control in disputed Kashmir, a step aimed at easing recent strains between the two countries.
Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh held a meeting in New York on the sideline of the UN assembly and decided to open trans-Kashmir trade last month.
