Poland needs to professionalize its army so that it becomes stronger, Poland's President Lech Kaczynski said on Friday.
Poland, with the population of close to 40 million, needs an over 100,000-strong army to defend its territory, to have efficient expeditionary forces and to secure its prestige, the president said during a ceremony marking the 90th anniversary of the re-establishment of the Polish Army General Staff.
"Poland is a country which can afford an over 100,000-strong army," Polish news agency PAP quoted the president as saying. "As Poland's president I will strive for Poland to have such an army, which will be stronger and stronger."
The president honored some 30 General Staff officials with Stars of Iraq and Afghanistan, and Military Crosses of Merit.
Poland's Defense Minister Bogdan Klich recalled that Poland's army is planned to be 120,000 strong.
