Turkey's President Abdullah Gul reaffirmed on Monday Turkey's European Union (EU) full membership target during the opening ceremony of the 9th Annual North South Europe Economic Forum in the Aegean Turkish city of Izmir.

Turkey's goal was to become a full member of the EU under equal conditions with other members, and "we will exert efforts to achieve this target without interruption," Gul was quoted as saying by the semi-official Anatolia news agency.

He said Turkey had adjusted to EU criteria in many areas thanks to its economic and political reforms, but there were still things Turkey had to do.

The theme of the two-day forum is "Turkey--a strong partner for Europe." Gul said the atmosphere of cooperation created by the forum would strengthen political and economic ties in Europe.

"I hope the Izmir forum will contribute to brainstorming aiming to minimize the impact of the recent global economic crisis on Europe and the countries in this geography, and to turn such crisis into an opportunity," Gul said.
