Romania does not want to interfere in the processes underway in the Middle East but will be ready, at any time, to participate in them if asked to do so, President Traian Basescu said Monday after meeting with his visiting Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas.
Basescu's remarks came in response to a question on whether Romania will be more actively involved in the negotiations in the Middle East. He also emphasized that Romania has major security and economic interests, as well as interests connected to the Romanian communities in Middle Eastern countries.
"I mention that in an effort to re-establish the traditional relations Romania has had in the region," he said.
"We have Romanian communities in the Arab states in the region, and a big Romanian community in Israel," said the president.
Abbas recalled the fact that the first official Palestinian-Israeli meeting took place in the Romanian capital of Bucharest in 1988, stressing that it qualifies Romania to have a role in the region.
Abbas arrived in Bucharest on Monday for a two-day official visit.
