Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme congratulated Barak Obama on Wednesday on his election as the new U.S. president.
In a message to Obama, Leterme said Obama's election as the 44th U.S. president coincides with a time when the expectations of the people towards their political leaders are high, Belgian broadcaster VRT reported.
"There are many challenges ahead, in particular the financial crisis and the economic slowdown, the climate change, the need to preserve social cohesion and finally the challenges in the field of peace and security," he said.
Leterme referred the relations between Belgium and the United States as "a true friendship based on common values and a lasting sense of solidarity." He said he looks forward to working closely with Obama to find common solutions to the global challenges.
