African Union Commission Chairperson Jean Ping on Wednesday congratulated Barack Obama on his election as the first African American president.

In a statement from the AU headquarters, Ping pledged his personal commitment "to continue to work closely with the new administration to further deepen the cultural and historical ties that bind Africa and the United States."

While looking forward to strengthening the ties between Africa and the United States, Ping welcomed the election of president-elect Obama "as a new chapter in the history of the United States, which holds great promise and hope for Africa and the rest of the world."
