Serbian Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic said on Wednesday his country expected better relations with the United States in the wake of Barack Obama's election victory, the official Tanjug news agency reported
"I hope that our relations with the new American government will be better than those with the departing administration," Jeremic said at a news conference.
Jeremic hoped for more understanding and more room for cooperation with the new U.S. administration.
He said the U.S presidential election is both important for America and the world's politics.
"I think the world hoped for changes and that is what happened," Jeremic noted.
U.S. Ambassador to Belgrade Cameroon Munter said on the day that the U.S. policy of partnership and friendship with Serbia will continue after the elections.
The Serbia-U.S. relations deteriorated drastically when Kosovo, the breakaway Serbian province unilaterally declared independence on Feb. 17 with strong supports from the United States and most EU nations.
On Feb. 21, hundreds of angry Serbian protesters broke into the U.S. embassy in central Belgrade, smashing doors and windows and setting fire to a part of the building. The extensive damage forced the closure of the consular section for over a month.
