Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus said Wednesday that Russia's plan to deploy missiles in Kaliningrad was "beyond comprehension," according to reports reaching here from Vilnius.
"Russia's President Dmitry Medvedev is difficult to understand as his words are mutually conflicting... He talks about the commitment to act together against our common threats but sends missiles to Kaliningrad to neutralize the anti-missile defense system," said Adamkus.
He defended the U.S. anti-missile defense system, saying it is not targeted against Russia.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said earlier in the day that Russia would deploy short-range Iskander missiles in its Baltic Sea enclave, sandwiched between Poland and Lithuania, "to neutralize, if necessary, a missile defense system."
The Iskander has a range of about 280 kilometers and is capable of carrying nuclear warheads.
