The Finnish government is planning to send more peacekeepers to Chad, according to reports reaching here from Helsinki Thursday.
Finland now has about 60 peacekeepers in Chad as part of an EU-led crisis management operation due to be handed over to the United Nations (UN) in March.
The strength of the Finnish contingent on the ground in Chad could be raised to 100 people next year and up to 200 at some point in the future, Finnish Defense Minister Jyri Haekaemies told the Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE.
The Finnish government was also considering taking part in a Nordic program to train African crisis management troops, said Haekaemies, adding that the issue would be discussed at a Nordic defence ministers' meeting next week.
The European Union maintains a 3,500-strong peacekeeping force in Chad and the Central African Republic.
