Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg said Thursday his country supports Turkey's bid for the membership of the European Union (EU) as soon as possible.
The Czech Republic was one of the strongest advocators of Turkey's EU membership in the bloc, Schwarzenberg said while meeting his visiting Turkish counterpart Ali Babacan.
Babacan said he was confident that achievements would be made on talks over Turkey's EU membership during the upcoming Czech presidency of the EU in 2009.
Czech President Vaclav Klaus also expressed his wishes for Turkey's speedy EU accession in talks with Babacan. The president has invited his Turkish counterpart Abdullah Gul to visit the Czech Republic early next year.
