The cost of becoming a Dutch citizen will rise sharply under a new proposal by Dutch Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin, local press reported Friday.

The Justice Ministry is planning to introduce a naturalization fee of 83 euros (about 105 U.S. dollars) for people under 18 who become Dutch citizens and to raise the charge to 552 euros (about 696 U.S. dollars) for adults, the Dutch news agency ANP quoted Ballin as saying.

There currently is no charge for children for a Dutch passport. People with low incomes have to pay 243 euros (306 U.S. dollars) for a passport and the cost for others is 366 euros.

The fees need to be increased so that the entire cost of becoming Dutch citizens is passed on to the individuals, the report said.
