The opposition to EU membership has never been greater than now in Norway, according to a new survey received here Saturday.
The poll, made for the Norwegian newspapers Nationen, Klassekampen and Dagen, showed that 53.4 percent of Norwegians would vote against seeking EU membership, while 34.6 percent in favor of such a move, if a referendum is held now.
The split between the two sides is therefore almost 19 percent, higher than what it has been for six years, the Norwegian public broadcaster NRK said in a report.
The poll released by NRK two months ago showed that 53 percent of Norwegians would vote against seeking EU membership while 36 percent in favor of the move.
The number of voters in favor is far lower than the figure in 1994 referendum. At that time, 47.8 percent voted in favor, while 52.2 percent were against.
Among those voting for the Labor Party and the Progress Party, the country's two largest parties in the parliament, there is a majority opposing EU membership, according to the latest poll.
