The Russian army will be equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and military hardware by 2020, the country's general chief-of-staff said Wednesday.
"We plan to equip the army with the latest weapons and military hardware by 30 percent in the next three or five years and raise this figure to 80-100 percent by 2018-2020," Gen. Nikolai Makarov was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.
The Russian armed forces would have only permanent-readiness units after the modernization, in comparison with the units' share of less than 20 percent now, added Makarov.
According to official data, the Russian army has been provided with over 300 types of new weapons since 2001.
