Cyprus backs Russia's initiative to conclude a new treaty on European security, visiting Cypriot President Demetris Christofias said here Wednesday following talks with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev.

"Russia and President Medvedev's initiative to build a system of security, trust and cooperation anew, and to breathe new life into it, has received a positive response in Cyprus," Christofias was quoted by Interfax news agency as saying.

This proposal is based on the principles of the United Nations, the organization's charter, and international law, he said.

"These principles lead to dialogue and to mutual understanding, not to what is called 'a new order of things' but in fact means anarchy and disorder."

Medvedev hailed Cyprus' support for the proposal, saying such a treaty is important for shaping a new architecture of security and for making the world a more peaceful and stable place to live in.

Cyprus's position was documented in a joint declaration on boosting friendship and cooperation between Russia and Cyprus signed by the two presidents.

This makes Cyprus the first European state to officially declare its readiness to work on a pan-European security treaty earlier proposed by the Russian president.
