An international book fair Buch Wien 08, the first of its kind hosted by Austria, opened at Vienna Exhibition Center here on Thursday.
The international book fair is a semi-professional book exhibition that allows trade of books and copyrights at the same time, which has attracted 271 publishers with 107 from abroad, although the world biggest Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany has only ended for one month.
This book fair focuses on Central and East Europe, so publishers from these countries account for the major part of foreign exhibitors. In addition, some publishers from Arabic and Asian areas have also taken part.
Books of literature, detective stories, science fiction, fairy tales, biography and other professional books and magazines, as well as some new media books like e-books and audio books are also exhibited at this book fair. Books on daily life, children literature and literature masterpieces account for the major part, attracting many visitors.
Six platforms including "professional book forum," "cooking corner" and "children literature forum" are established at the site. Scholars, authors and publishers are invited to the book fair to discuss with readers, introduce new books or answer readers' questions.
As this is the first Vienna international book fair, some exhibitors come just for an attempt. General Manager of the Swiss Booksellers and Publishers Association (SBVV) Dani Landolf said he would consider this book fair as a "slabstone" for entering the East European market.
A Reading Week is held in Vienna at the same time. During the Reading Week from Nov. 17 to Nov. 23, about 340 activities including lectures, symposiums, and book review forums will be held at over 70 sites in Vienna. Austrian and internationally well-known writers and scholars will be invited to exchange views with readers face to face.
The eighth "One City, One Book" activity organized by the municipal government of Vienna also begins on Thursday. This year,100,000 copies of an autobiography "To Continue to Live: A Childhood" will be given to citizens for free at book stores or the book fair. Born in Vienna, the author wrote about her sufferings in the Nazi concentration camp in her childhood.
