Croatia held a farewell ceremony on Monday for its second contingent participating in the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) mission on the Golan Heights.

Addressing members of the contingent in the Petrinja barracks in central Croatia, Deputy Chief of General Staff Rear Admiral Zdenko Simicic said the farewell ceremony was yet another example on the path of the development of the Croatian Armed forces, the official Croatian news agency HINA reported.

Simicic said that currently Croatian Armed Forces participate in 13 UN peacekeeping operations throughout the world.

The second Croatian contingent participating in the UNDOF mission includes 91 members who will be deployed on the Golan Heights during the next six months, he said.

The UNDOF mission was established in 1974 to supervise the implementation of the agreed disengagement of the Israeli and Syrian forces and maintain the ceasefire.

Croatia sent its first contingent to participate in the UNDOF mission in June. The contingent with 95 soldiers performs its duties as part of an Austrian battalion. This is the first time Croatia has sent a company to a UN peacekeeping mission.

Croatia started its first UN peacekeeping mission in 1999, when10 members of its armed forces in the capacity of military observers went to the United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone.
