The European Commission on Thursday sent letters of final warning to six countries on the implementation of European Union (EU) legislation on gender equality in employment and occupation.
The six member states are Austria, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Malta and Slovenia.
The main problems include definitions of direct and indirect discrimination, rights of women on maternity leave, and the functioning of equality bodies, said the commission, the executive body of the EU and the guardian of its laws.
The six countries have two months to respond to the commission's warning. If they fail to reply or if the response is deemed unsatisfactory, the commission can take them to the European Court of Justice. Source: Xinhua
