Belgian security services said they have arrested eleven people for alleged links with a suspected terror cell whose members are being tried in Morocco, local MAP news agency reported on Thursday.
The suspects, including six Moroccans and one Algerian citizen, are believed to have links to the Beliraj cell, which is led by Abdelkader Belliraj, a dual Moroccan-Belgian national, and which is accused of planning attacks against Moroccan Jewish personalities, cabinet ministers and high-ranking militaries.
The arrests were operated under an international arrest warrant issued by the Moroccan authorities. The suspects were arrested in the Belgian cities of Brussels, Tongres, Nivelle and Arlon, a spokesperson for the Belgian prosecution was quoted as saying.
The home searches made by about a hundred Belgian security agents allowed for confiscating documents and computers, the source added.
The 35-member strong Belliraj cell was broken up in mid-February 2008, and its members are held in Morocco on terror-related charges.
They include two leaders of an Islamist party, Al Badil Al Hadari (the Civilizational Alternative), a member of the moderate Islamist Justice and Development party (PJD) that ranked second in the Sept. 7, 2007 elections in Morocco, and a member of the unrecognized Islamist party of Al Umma.
