Italy will take special measures to meet the new terror threat posed by attacks such as the one in India that has killed over 100 people, Interior Minister Roberto Maroni said Friday.
The minister said Italian security chiefs were consulting American and European counterparts and would draft new security guidelines as soon as possible.
"What happened in Mumbai was an exceptional event and requires exceptional attention," he said, adding that Italy's terror alert systems had already been raised to their highest level.
All seven hostages held by suspected Islamists in Mumbai's luxury Oberoi hotel were freed by Indian special forces Friday morning, Italian News Agency ANSA said.
The seven included the wife of the hotel's Italian chef and their six-month-old daughter.
The coordinated attacks began Wednesday night when an estimated25 men armed with assault rifles and grenades attacked sites popular with tourists and businessmen, including the Oberoi and the city's other top hotel, the Taj Mahal. Source: Xinhua
