The Alliance of Social Democrats and Conservatives regained its lead in parliamentary elections, latest results showed Monday.
With 92.73 percent of the vote in Sunday's elections counted, the Alliance of Social Democrats and Conservatives got 33 percent in the Deputies' Chamber, the lower house of parliament, and 33.99percent in the Senate, the Central Election Bureau said.
The Social Democrats were closely followed by the pro-presidential Liberal Democratic Party, which obtained 32.57 percent and 33.79 percent in the two houses of parliament respectively.
The ruling National Liberals came third, with 18.32 percent and18.49 percent in the two houses, while the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania, a junior ruling coalition partner, got 6.29 percent and 6.54 percent.
The Social Democrats are the largest party in parliament. Exit polls on polling day had initially put the party well ahead in both houses of the parliament.
However, partial results released later showed that the center-left party was surpassed by the Liberal Democrats.
Romanians voted in Sunday's parliamentary elections to elect a new parliament. There were some 18 million eligible voters and voter turnout hit a historic low of 39.26 percent, according to the Central Electoral Bureau. Source:Xinhua
