The Alliance of Social Democrats and Conservatives still remained on the top of the voters' preference, showed the latest results on Monday evening.
Following the counting of votes in 99.62 percent of polling stations countrywide, the Alliance of Social Democrats and Conservatives obtained 33.09 percent in the Deputies' Chamber, the lower house of parliament, and 34.12 percent in the Senate, announced Marian Muhulet, spokesperson of the Central Election Bureau.
The alliance was very closely followed by the pro-presidential Liberal Democratic Party, which obtained 32.34 percent and 33.57 percent in the two houses of parliament respectively.
The ruling National Liberal Party remained the third, with 18.57 percent and 18.75 percent of votes for the two houses, while the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania, a junior ruling coalition partner, got 6.18 percent and 6.41 percent votes.
The Social Democrats are the largest party in parliament. Exit polls on polling day had initially put the party well ahead in both houses of the parliament. However, the first partial results released on Monday morning showed that the center-left party was surpassed by the Liberal Democrats.
Romanians voted in Sunday's parliamentary elections to elect a new parliament. There were some 18 million eligible voters and voter turnout hit a historical low of 39.26 percent, according to the Central Electoral Bureau.
