French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Tuesday announced a plan to invest 70 million euros (about 90 million U.S. dollars) in psychiatric hospitals reform.
The president made the announcement three weeks after a student was stabbed to death by a mental patient in Grenoble, southeastern France.
The investment aims to strengthen security of the psychiatric hospitals nationwide, especially "to secure better control over entry and exit of the establishments and prevent runaways," he said.
The money will also be used to improve care of difficult patients, he added.
On Nov. 12, a patient escaped from a psychiatric hospital in Grenoble in southeastern France and killed a 26-year-old student.
Sarkozy has asked the minister of interior, justice and health to carry out a "thorough reform" of psychiatric hospitals after the tragedy took place. Source:Xinhua
