Albania signed two energy deals with Italy on Tuesday to boost cooperation in the field of energy between the two neighbors across the Adriatic Sea.
The two deals, worth more than 2 billion euros (about 2. 5 billion U.S. dollars), include a one-billion-euro (1.26 billion dollar) regasification project and a 1.2-billion-euro (1.51 billion dollar) wind farm.
Under the agreement, the two projects will be built by Italian companies in Albania, and the electricity generated will be feeding both the Italian and Albanian markets.
The first project, which will regasify imported liquid gas to fire a power plant, will be sited in the city of Firer in central Albania. And the wind farm, billed as the largest in Europe, will be located near the southern beach city of Vlora.
Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who is on a brief visit to Albania, and his Albanian counterpart Sali Berisha attended the signing ceremony.
However, the Italian plans to build the two projects on the Albanian soil encountered some holdouts in Albania. On Tuesday, an Albanian non-governmental organization named "Enough" staged a protest against the Italian plans.
