French President Nicolas Sarkozy has appointed the head of his ruling Union for a Popular Movement party (UMP) Patrick Devedjian the minister responsible for the implementation of a newly announced economic stimulus plan, Sarkozy's office said Friday.
According to a statement of the Elysee, Devedjian, current secretary general of the French ruling UMP and former Minister of Industry (2004-2005), will occupy a ministerial-level post and report to Prime Minister Francois Fillon.
The appointment came after President Sarkozy unveiled a 26-billion-euro (33 billion U.S. dollar) revival plan on Thursday to boost French economic growth.
"A budget will be dedicated to financing the plan. A minister will be specifically responsible for monitoring implementation," said the president.
Local media said the appointment of Devedjian could lead a reorganization of the UMP.
Devedjian, 64, is the head of the district council for the Hauts de Seine, west of Paris, and was mayor of Antony. Source: Xinhua
