Greek workers took to the streets in central Athens on Wednesday to protest against the government's economic policies.

Public sector workers, teachers, journalists and bank clerks participated in the general strike, which was called and organized by Greece's two largest unions, the General Confederation of Workers of Greece (GSEE) and the ADEDY civil servants' union.

The protestors demand that the government increase social spending and raise wages and pensions in the face of the ongoing global financial crisis.

Flights in and out of Athens airport have been cancelled, and public transport has been badly crippled with only the metro in service. People working for private companies had to find their own ways to get to work.

Some protesters also marched to the Greek parliament, waving banners and shouting anti-government slogans.

The strike added to the woes of residents of the capital, which has seen days of violent rioting by youngsters protesting Saturday's police killing of a teenaged boy.
